Auckland University Clock Tower


As an existing client, The University of Auckland approached Brandstand to formulate possible options for a literature display solution to be used in a Heritage building, namely the Clock Tower Building. The solution needed to accommodate a magnitude of different size brochures & prospectuses for dispensing whilst also incorporating storage for all their print collateral. It also needed to be future proofed so that the client can reconfigure the display for different sizes and layouts.

The Challenge

The first challenge was the dispensing solution that would allow maximum display area whilst maintaining the required flexibility in the reconfiguration of the system. The second challenge was the hardest to deliver on as we needed to ensure the overall design not only blended with the overall aesthetics of the heritage interior, but also complemented various architectural features that were in close proximity. Lastly, we had to overcome the challenge of ensuring the design fitted into the physical spaces allocated in the building whilst still maintaining the desired number of dispensing pockets.

The Solution

The functional side of the design included adjustable pockets running on a rail system; the rails can be moved to allow for various heights. With the addition or removal of the rail dividers and rails, the quantity and sizes can be varied to suit. Behind the detailed panelling on the lower part of the units, we ensured ample lockable storage for those bulk print runs. With the aesthetics, we picked up various elements in the building that were designed into the units. These included making the units from rimu to match all the other timber on the interior, the height of the building skirting to march with units to ensure a continuous visual line, incorporating various moulding into the units that are used in the building and various shapes of internal gables and pelmets.

All this resulted in a striking display that was not only functional and true to its surroundings, but aesthetically pleasing.
